The imminent launch of iPad 3, now rumored to be March 29, 2012, leaves the question, what is the iPad 3 price going to be?
As the buzz is growing louder and gaining momentum with regard to the iPad 3 price, design, features, and specs, we also need to give some consideration of the present iPad 2 version of the Apples tablet.
When the Apple iPad 2 was initially launched, the price of the original iPad was slashed by $100. However, it should be kept in mind that Apple tablets barely had to contend with any serious competition at that point of time. The situation has changed now. In today’s competitive market, the Kindle Fire from Amazon is priced at $199 and it has been a big success. Amazon has sold millions of Kindle Fire units since its launch. Now, Amazon too is promising a refreshed version of its successful tablet.
Taking into account the present scenario, Apple could well be planning strategic moves with its iPad 3 price to stem Kindle Fire’s pace of growth of the Kindle Fire. According to the Digitimes blog, there could be two versions of the iPad 3 offered, one being the lower prices variant that has a resolution similar to iPad 2, while the other being the higher priced version that will sport the Retina Display.
The higher priced version is expected to have a price tag of $499 while the lower priced version is expected to have a price tag of $399.
However, this still does not bridge the steep difference in the prices between the Kindle Fire and iPad. Hence, this makes a very good case for Apple to slash down the price of the popular iPad 2 to $299 and start fighting for Kindle Fire’s share.
Apple believes that there could be a pretty significant customer base that would be willing to pay $299 gladly for the iPad 2 instead of immediately jumping in the new iPad 3.
Now, the interesting question would be, will Apple get even further aggressive with regard to the pricing of its tablets. When iPad 2 gets restricted in supply, then the cheapest tablet from the Apple staple would be prices at $399, which can easily be matched by most Android tablets.
Therefore, the probability of slashing the iPad 2 price to $199 for competing with Amazon’s Kindle Fire and also the base iPad 3 price to $299 cannot be fully ruled out.
